Nestled within Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park, the village of Chalten is a slice of heaven for nature enthusiasts. Here, you can step into the awe-inspiring postcard-perfect landscapes that seem almost too breathtaking to be real. What’s even better, Chalten offers something for all ages, and the trekking trails are accessible right from the village, so you don’t need a guide. During my visit, I encountered solo travelers of all ages and backgrounds, both men and women, all eager to explore this pristine wilderness.
Discovering Chalten: The Trekking Capital of Argentina: Chalten is renowned as Argentina’s national trekking capital, and it’s easy to see why. Surrounded by the striking peaks of Cerro Torre and Mount Fitz Roy (standing tall at 3,405 meters), it’s a gateway to natural wonders like Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Capri. The landscapes here are nothing short of spectacular. Surprisingly, on many of the trekking routes, I encountered hikers aged 60 and above, proving that this destination is for everyone.
The village itself exudes charm, and if you’re a food lover, don’t miss the opportunity to savor the best lamb at La Oveja Negra.
Immersing in Patagonia: Two Unforgettable Experiences:
To truly experience Patagonia, you need to move beyond the postcards and immerse yourself in the wilderness. During my stay, I had the privilege of partaking in two activities that allowed me to do just that.
- Horseback Riding: Picture yourself on horseback, traversing rugged hills and trails, braving the frigid winds, one step at a time, all while placing your trust in your trusty travel companion, the horse. I opted for a horseback riding adventure with Bonanza, and our destination was Estancia Bonanza.
.
The horses were incredibly gentle, and the gauchos leading the group were experienced, professional, and attentive. The landscape was nothing short of spectacular, despite the biting cold wind. With temperatures hovering around 7°C and gusts of wind reaching 30 km/h, there was a moment when the wind even pushed my horse. I held on tightly like a tick to Panchito’s back, and he handled it like a pro.
As the frigid wind howled through the forest along the riverbank, surrounded by a herd of horses, gauchos, mountains, and Fitz Roy in the distance, I was in awe. And then came the delightful surprise – we stopped at a farmhouse where we were welcomed with tea, infusions, and pastries. Warmth. The experience was nothing short of fantastic, and it was tough to bid farewell.
This adventure comes highly recommended, even for those with little to no horseback riding experience.
- White-Water Rafting: If horseback riding wasn’t immersive enough, I had another opportunity to dive headfirst into Patagonia’s heart – this time by getting wet with glacier water and surrendering to the swirling currents through white-water rafting. In neoprene suits and aboard an inflatable boat, we were accompanied by a canoe.
Gerardo Roberts, who goes by “Loli,” is a water whisperer with 30 years of experience in this realm. His eight children (six boys and two girls) are all active athletes, with the eldest even being a Pan American kayak champion. The 17-kilometer river journey includes navigating 15 to 17 whirlpools, and the landscape is nothing short of lunar.
The experience is intense, but Loli makes it incredibly fun with his trademark shout, “raise the paddle, celebrate!” Prior experience isn’t necessary for this activity, but be prepared for a little chill if the wind picks up. Nevertheless, it’s worth every shiver to “touch the glacier for real.”
This combination of horseback riding and white-water rafting offers the complete Patagonian experience, allowing you to connect with the stunning Los Glaciares National Park on a whole new level.
